Ban Ki-moon to discuss joint drug-busting efforts

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is going to meet the leaders of Russia and five Central Asian countries to take up joint measures to fight drug trafficking from Afghanistan. Ban Ki-moon said as much in an interview with the RIA-Novosti news agency in the run-up to his visit to Moscow on March 17th through the 19th. According to the official, fighting drug trafficking is an important part of the effort to ensure peace and stability in Afghanistan. He said Russia was providing essential assistance for the Afghan government in rooting out the drug problem.  He also voiced hope that the Heads of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan would likewise be able to contribute to attaining the objectives in question. Afghanistan accounts for 90% of world heroin production. Russia is the world’s number one consumer of heroin. The number of drug addicts in Russia has increased tenfold in the past 10 years.
