A unique township for seniors is due to be built in Japan, one that will provide them with an opportunity to lead an active life, take care of their health and work, if they so wish. The future residential compound is due to be located in the built-up area of Kashiwa, in the immediate vicinity of Tokyo. The residential quarters of five-storey blocks of flats are due to be pulled down there, to be replaced with high-rise complexes. Medical centres will be built in the middle of each complex to take care of the residents round the clock. Continuously open clubs for socializing will be available next to the medical centres. According to research, many Japanese of advanced age are still physically fit and can work, but find it difficult to daily travel to their work and back home in crowded commuter trains. The residential complexes will offer them all sorts of workshops, business centres and even small farms on house roofs to grow flowers and ecologically pure vegetables. If the experiment proves a success, this kind of project will also be launched in other parts of the fast-ageing Japan. According to the ITAR-TASS news agency, people above 65 will account for over 30% of the Japanese population by the year 2030.
