An air mobile hospital of the Russian Emergencies Ministry is working round the clock in Santiago. Russian doctors and their Chilean colleagues are saving dozens of lives in the wake of the devastating earthquake, which destroyed most of the local hospitals and medical centers.
A total of 45 medical specialists from Russia, including surgeons, psychologists and therapists, are rendering medical assistance on a day-to-day basis. The hospital boasts cutting-edge medical equipment, including intensive-care units, operation and diagnostic wards, ultra-sound and X-ray tests, ECG rooms and a blood laboratory, and it can receive 60 emergency patients at a time.
The hospital staff have worked with various humanitarian missions, including in Haiti, which was struck by a powerful earthquake too recently. As compared to Haiti, work in Chile is less hectic and the conditions are less severe. Vladimir Brazhnikov is the Deputy Director of the Emergencies Ministry's International Relations Department:
"Russian doctors and rescue workers are working in good conditions, he says. The hospital is located on a guarded territory. Yesterday, on their first working day, the surgeons performed 4 operations, 12 patients received psychological counseling. 3 people are in intensive care. Chilean authorities have provided the hospital with electricity and water".
According to Vladimir Brazhnikov, ILYUSHIN-76 planes of the Russian Emergencies Ministry are to deliver humanitarian cargoes to quake-hit areas, like they did in Haiti. Russian rescuers are to stay in Chile for at least two weeks. Chilean Interior Ministry reports say more than one thousand people who suffered in the quake need medical assistance.
