The Russian president’s ombudsman for children Pavel Astakhov will seek a meeting with Finland’s President Tarja Halonen on his upcoming trip to Helsinki, beginning Tuesday, to discuss the situation around a seven-year-old boy with dual Russian-Finnish citizenship who was forcibly taken away from his family by authorities in Turku. The boy’s Russian grandmother asked him meet with the Finnish head of state, he told reporters. Astakhov will hold a series of talks with his Finnish counterpart and local guardianship officials. Robert Rantala, born into a Russian-Finnish family, was placed in an asylum after he said at school that he would probably move to Russia. Arguing that it was dangerous for a boy to stay in the family, the authorities filed a lawsuit demanding that both of Robert’s parents be stripped of their parental rights.
