Antigovernment protests in Bangkok
| Mar 15, 2010 13:50 Moscow Time |
At least two Army servicemen were injured in a hand grenade blast earlier today in the Thai capital Bangkok, the site of a many-thousand strong antigovernment rally. The protesters, pressing for a change of constitution, disbandment of parliament and for holding another election, have blocked the city centre. The opposition leaders, who have over 100,000 of their supporters in the streets, are urging the protesters to concentrate outside the building of the national government. According to some reports, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has left by helicopter his makeshift office at the military base where explosions are said to have resounded. The local news media point out that protesters have so far made no attempt to break through into the compounds of government agency buildings. The Thai military has been ordered not to use arms against the demonstrators unless the latter attack military facilities and/or hospitals.
