| Mar 15, 2010 16:14 Moscow Time |
The Riga Duma has banned all events paying tribute to Latvian Waffen SS Legion on March, 16th , ITAR-TASS reports. This was decided after receiving information from the Polish police about possible provocations. The mayor of Riga Nil Ushakov said in an interview Monday «There is a serious threat to safety. We decided that it is impossible to take the risk. We support freedom of speech, only if does not threaten safety». According to Latvia’s Interior Minister Linda Murniece, «this is the wrong day to satisfy one’s curiosity by going to places where supporters of different views gather”. On March 16th, 1943 two Latvian Waffen SS divisions were formed in Riga. Nationalists have been marking this day since Latvia broke away from the USSR. SS marches were condemned by Russia and the West.
