Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, on a planned working visit. His talks with the Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow will focus on ways of boosting economic ties and closer partnership in promoting security in Central Asia. The gas industry dominates bilateral economic cooperation. At a briefing ahead of the visit, Russian Foreign Ministry’s official spokesman Andrei Nestrenko said Turkmenistan was the second largest producer and importer of gas after Russia in the post-Soviet territory. Turkmen gas is carried to Russia through the Central Asia-Center pipeline. Under bilateral treaties, about 12 billion cubic meters are to be pumped this year.
