Bad weather blacks out South Ossetia
| Mar 16, 2010 14:14 Moscow Time |
Traffic on the Transcaucasian highway has been suspended due to heavy snowfalls that show no signs of abating, a spokesperson for North Ossetia's emergencies ministry said on Tuesday. Electricity supplies from Russia to South Ossetia were earlier cut due to heavy snowfalls and avalanches, which are believed to have brought down power lines located near the highway, the spokesperson added. Right now, the Russian North Caucasus republic of South Ossetia is totally blacked out, with all the maintenance crews responsible for the Transcaucasian highway working in emergency mode, the spokesperson explained.
