Russia concerned Finnish policy on children
| Mar 16, 2010 16:13 Moscow Time |
The Russian President’s Ombudsman for Children Pavel Astakhov is concerned with repeated taking away of children from Russian-Finnish families. According to his data, 4 children were taken away from such families in 2009 and 7 during the past 7 years. In early February, Finnish custody authorities put seven-year-old Robert Rantala, a Russian citizen, in an orphanage and filed a lawsuit demanding that both parents be stripped of their parental rights for smacking their son. When the boy was allowed to go to school, he seized the opportunity to run away to his parents. The boy’s father, Finn, Veli-Pekka Rantala intends to apply for Russian citizenship. Astakhov believes the Rantalas can protect their rights in international courts.
