Several European ambassadors to Georgia have criticized a scandalous news report on a Russian invasion of Georgia shown by the Imedi TV channel last Saturday, the opposition leader Zurab Nogaideli said Tuesday after having talks with some of the ambassadors. During the Moscow-Tbilisi video conference, Nogaideli said he believed that Mikhail Saakashvili stood behind the hoax report, which he planned as part of his campaign against the opposition. The fake report, which said that Russian tanks had invaded Tbilisi and Saakashvili was dead, caused panic among the people. Hundreds of opposition supporters took to the streets to voice their indignation about the hoax. Mr. Nogaideli thinks that ‘President Saakashvili himself did not expect public reaction to the fake report to be that negative’.
