Around 2000 labour union activists hit Athens’ streets late Tuesday to protest the government austerity campaign. During the rally the protesters decided to vent their anger on the police which caused an open standoff with the police troops using noise grenades.
Government employees are not happy with the state decision to cut benefits and reduce an average annual income of the state employed by around 8%. Meanwhile, the austerity programme is a desperate measure to cut Greece’s budget deficit from 12.7% to 8.7%
Tuesday protests have already resulted in power cutoffs in several districts of Salonika. Around 400 medics and hospital nurses went on strike all around Greece. The Church of Greece is unhappy with the recent policies either, as now it will have to pay an annual 20% tax for its vast property.
Thursday will see more strike actions by taxi drivers and petrol stations.
