Athens police use tear gas to break up mass protests
| Mar 17, 2010 09:53 Moscow Time |
In the Greek capital city police have used tear gas to break up demonstrators protesting against cuts in government spending. Some 2,000 people were marching to the Greek Parliament building with posters saying that they would not pay for the crisis and demanding that the government should walk back on its austerity measures. A group of young radically-minded people started throwing stones and bottles at the police, so the latter used tear gas against the protesters and arrested two of them. The Greek government’s austerity measures to reduce the state budget deficit met with support from the European Union, but were vigorously opposed by the local unions. The personnel of Greece’s State Energy Corporation are about to go on a 48-hour strike today.
