Canadian spots Soviet Lunakhod on Moon photo
| Mar 17, 2010 11:45 Moscow Time |
The Ontario University professor Phil Stooke has spotted a Soviet moon rover, Lunakhod, on NASA new photos of the Moon. Contact with the Lunakhod was lost 37 years ago. Professor Stooke was able to trace the entire path of the rover and determine the places where Lunakhod measured the magnetic field by moving to and fro along the same route, to collect more information. After that the rover accidentally drove into a small crater and scooped ground into the radiator. This caused engine overheating and breakdown. That particular rover, Lunakhod-2, was flown to the Moon by the Luna-21 automatic station on January 16th 1973. It remained operational for four months and transmitted over 80,000 photographs to the Earth over the period.
