Bolshoi premieres its first operetta
| Mar 17, 2010 14:29 Moscow Time |
Moscow’s renowned Bolshoi Theater will premiere “The Bat” by Johann Strauss-junior tonight, the first ever operetta in its history. Reformist-minded stage director Vasily Barkhatov changed Strauss’ masterpiece beyond recognition. He transferred the action from the late 19th century to the 1970s and from Vienna to a luxury cruiser. The musical part was entrusted to maestro Christoph Matthias Mueller of Switzerland, an expert in German and Austrian music. The Bolshoi was closed for two weeks before the premiere – so much time did it take to fix the sets.
