Lavrov, Clinton meet in Moscow

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are meeting in Moscow on Thursday to discuss nuclear weapons reduction, ballistic missile defense, Middle East and Iran. The main issue will be preparation of a new strategic nuclear weapons treaty, for the previous one expired last December. Earlier Mr. Lavrov has said that late May or April is the date set by both countries’ Presidents for the new treaty to be ready. Lavrov and Clinton will also discuss coordination of two countries’ efforts in the sphere of weapons non-proliferation on the eve of a global summit on nuclear disarmament which is to take place on April 12 – 13 and where President Medvedev is expected to take part. The international agenda of the meeting will include speeding of Middle East peace settlement, diplomatic ways to solve the Iraqi nuclear problem and joint Russo-American efforts for stability in Afghanistan. On Friday Hillary Clinton will take part in a council of the Middle East mediators quartet with the participation of UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon.
