An expanded meeting of the Russian Security Council took place in the Kremlin on Wednesday to focus on threats posed by global climate change, the Komsomolskaya Pravda reports. The participants found out that only one threat is directly linked to global warming: permafrost melting puts in danger some infrastructure facilities. Thus, the Baikal-Amur mainline lies mostly in the permafrost area. Other threats Russia is facing from the countries which have been trying to infringe its economic interests under the pretext of fighting climate change.

 Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has signed a decree to organize a special center that would carry out a research into the life of the Russian emigrants in France, the Vremya Novostei reports. The center will be located in Sainte-Genevieve-des-Bois in the southern suburbs of Paris, where many outstanding Russian people were buried at the local cemetery of the same name. 

The Rossiyskaya Gazeta covers the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill`s visit to Armenia. Together with the Catholicos of All Armenians, His Holiness Karekin II, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church visited a memorial to the victims of the 1915 Armenian Genocide. In an alley close to the memorial there is a fir tree planted by Patriarch Kirill. Thousands of believers came to the Saint Gregory cathedral to attend a divine liturgy conducted by Patriarch Kirill. Karekin II ordered the head of the Russian Orthodox Church with an order of Saint Gregory the Dialogist.

Togliatti, Russia’s biggest auto-making center, may win a contract for the production of electric cars for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, the RBK Daily reports. Electro-mobiles would help the Games’ organizers to handle the transportation of sportsmen and VIP guests during the Olympics. On Wednesday, the Ricardo PLC firm presented its version of a future electric car for the Sochi Games at an international motor forum organized by the Adam Smith Institute.

Russia tops the unofficial team standings at the Winter Paralympics in Vancouver. On the fifth day of competitions, Russian Paralympians won 2 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals in various biathlon events, bringing the total number of medals for Russia to 23 - 8 “golds”, 10 “silvers” and 5 “bronzes”, the Gazeta newspaper writes. Germany has moved to the second position with 7 “golds”, 3 “silvers” and 2 “bronzes”. Candada has been placed third.
