Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Moscow expects the United Nations Organization (UN) to play a bigger role in global issues. As he started the talks with the UN chief Ban Ki-moon in Moscow on Thursday, Mr. Lavrov said Russia was seeking a growing role of the UN in the issues of nuclear security, climate change, war on terror, drug trafficking and organized crime. The Russian foreign minister added that Moscow will support UN activities in all these spheres. In his turn, Ban Ki-moon said he was going to discuss with Sergei Lavrov the role of the Quarter of Middle East mediators, comprising Russia, UN, US and EU, in the process of peaceful settlement in the region. The Quarter is scheduled to hold a meeting in Moscow tomorrow, March 19th. Soon after the meeting, the UN Chief is expected to tour the Middle East to hold talks with the Israeli and Palestinian officials.
