Russia's Paralympians continue to show spectacular results in Vancouver having won 23 medals, including 8 gold. Fairly often, the struggle for first and second places is between the Russians. In the biathlon race among athletes in wheel-chairs all three winning positions went to Russians.
Russian skiers and biathletes are giving their foreign colleagues no chances. Not a day has passed without Russians grabbing a gold, let alone silver or bronze. Skier Irek Zaripov has been named the absolute hero of the Paralympic Games in Vancouver. He has won three gold medals.
According to Gennady Shvets, who heads the Olympic Committee's PR Department, Russian athletes deserve high praise and respect:
"Russians are showing high class, particularly in view of the fierce competition, which is as tough as at the Olympics, he says. But the Paralympic athletes are determined to win, and we must help them. The Paralympic Games present a good opportunity for disabled people to live a full life. Many countries, Canada included, take care of the disabled by building ramps, stairs and lifts. In a civilized world one of the priorities is to get people out of difficulty and integrate them into society".
Russians have still every opportunity to grab more gold, silver or bronze medals before the Paralympic Games in Vancouver come to a close on March 21st. Gennady Shvets says the medal-winning athletes will be awarded hefty bonuses at the Olympic rates.
