The Middle East Quartet will press for its decisions to be implemented, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters as preparations continue for the Quartet’s ministerial session due in Moscow tomorrow. On Thursday, he met with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon who will also be attending Friday’s session. Mr. Lavrov confirmed the desire of the Quartet’s participants - Russia, the United States, the European Union and United Nations - to agree a document specifying their positions and asserting the previous international agreements setting the terms and parameters for Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. Ban Ki-moon, for his part, said he hoped tomorrow’s meeting would help resume direct contacts between Israel and Palestinians. He urged the Israeli government to halt settlement construction on Palestinian territories.
