Russia’s president Dmitry Medvedev and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon hope that the new START Treaty on reducing strategic offensive weapons will be signed shortly. Ban Ki-moon highly assessed Medvedev’s contribution to the non-proliferation process at a meeting with Russia’s president in the Kremlin,  Thursday. Russia and the US have been discussing the new START since the summer of 2009. The previous one expired December 5th, 2009. Still, controversies concerning control mechanisms and mutual inspections remain. Russian and US officials stated  the Treaty may be signed before the Disarmament Summit due on April 12-13, but the date is still unknown.
