KFOR hands over security of Kosovo monument to local police

International Kosovo forces (KFOR) have handed over the security of the monument to the heroes of the Battle of Kosovo in Gazimestan district to the Kosovo police. KSFOR had been in charge for protection of the monument since the end of Kosovo conflict in 1999.

In 1389, Gazimestan was the site of the historic Battle of Kosovo, between the Serbian and Turkish army. The battle marked the fall of the strong Serbian medieval state but became the foundation of the Serbian state-forming tradition. The monument was mined and demolished by Albanian extremists in 1999.
