| Mar 19, 2010 09:58 Moscow Time |
A court in the Polish city Krakow has sentenced three men to prison terms from 1.5 years to 2.5 years for stealing the metal sign Arbeit Macht Frei from the gate to the former Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz. The three stole the sign on the night of December 17th, and the theft had been masterminded by a Swedish neo-Nazi. Later Polish policemen found the metal sign in a forest and brought it back to the Auschwitz museum. The sign Arbeit Macht Frei was mounted over the main gate to the concentration camp where Nazis put to death up to 1.5 million inmates. Soviet troops seized Auschwitz in January 1945 and liberated the survivors.
