"Quartet" urges Israelis and Palestinians to solve conflict in two years
| Mar 19, 2010 12:28 Moscow Time |
The “quartet” of international mediators has urged Israelis and Palestinians to resume talks that should end in a final settlement in the next two years. This came in a statement in Moscow today by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon following the four mediators’ meeting on a Middle East settlement, namely Russia, the US, the UN and the Euroepan Union. The parties to the meeting welcomed Israel’s and Palestine’s readiness to launch indirect talks that the mediators have described as a move towards a direct dialogue. The meeting was attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the four mediators’ special envoy Tony Blair and the EU High Representative Catherine Ashton. The “quartet” has denounced Israel for residential construction in East Jerusalem and has urged Palestine to act in keeping with international law provisions and the relevant earlier signed agreements, including the Road Map plan. The four mediators have reiterated that Arab-Israeli peace and the creation of a Palestinian State in the West Bank and Gaza Strip meets the interests of all nations. The “quartet” supported the idea of holding eventually an international conference on the Middle East in Moscow.
