Most Russians are not ready to be politically active because -as they explain it- they do not feel that they are capable of changing the current situation somehow. Only the fifth part of the population is ready to take steps that could have an impact on the political life in this way or another, the latest polls show.
Nowadays Russians are more focused on themselves and their families. Usually, they are worried about personal relationships, health problems and finances. Unfortunately, in struggle for worthy living, Russians fail to dedicate themselves to global issues. Experts think the situation could be improved if the government paid attention not only to economic issues but also to social problems and transparency of the vertical of power. Leonid Polyakov of the Higher School of Economics:
"Most citizens do not think that their voting can really change the political system, which proves that Russia yet has not entered the necessary stage of democracy. That is why we need civil society composed of independent public organizations that would bridge the gap between the people and power".
The fact that Russians are not seeking power and distance themselves from the authorities is a sign of our epoch of media relations, says Dmitry Orlov, General Director of the Agency for Political and Economic Communications:
"Amid the ongoing modernization the main task is to make all public institutions and the economic system in general reliable. It is naïve to expect the majority of the population to approve modernization. Success will depend on a coalition which should certainly comprise some public representatives. If we have such a coalition, Russia will succeed in modernization".
In his recent address to the Federation Council, President Dmitry Medvedev stressed the need to develop cooperation between power and society. He called for the creation of new political parties to stimulate Russians to be more into politics.
