Russia approves extension of ISS lifespan
| Mar 19, 2010 12:45 Moscow Time |
The Russian government has approved plans to extend the International Space Station’s lifespan until 2020, according to the head of the Russian Federal Space Agency Anatoly Perminov. All legal papers are expected to be executed by that time, the Roskosmos leader said, adding that heads of the ISS program member-states even discussed the possibility of extending the station’s operation time by another eight years at the meeting recently held in Tokyo. Apart from Russia, Canada, Japan, the US and the European Space Agency, involved in the experiments at the ISS may also become India, China, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and Brazil. Although this doesn’t provide for flights of these countries’ astronauts to the station, all the new program members will be able to actively participate in its development.
