Disposable chop-sticks – a hazard to your health
| Mar 19, 2010 13:31 Moscow Time |
The Hunajiu Ribao newspaper reports that the disposable chop-sticks that millions of Chinese use every day are a health hazard. It has transpired that to make chop-sticks look attractive, the manufacturers use sulphur, hydrogen dioxide and wax. Experts believe that when the substances in question come into contact with the conjunctiva, they grow carcinogenic and can also provoke asthmatic attacks. The Chinese use 45 billion sets of disposable chop-sticks per year, an equivalent of approximately 25 million trees, according to ecologists. According to the Chinese press, the best part of disposable chop-sticks is manufactured in the Heilongjiang province, in the northeast of the country, from Russian timber exports.
