Russia is prepared to back UN sanctions against Iran, but with a condition attached. It believes any such sanctions must be smart, in the sense they do not hurt the Iranian people. Foreign Minister Lavrov told this to the press after he and President Dmitry Medvedev discussed the matter with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at a meeting with her outside Moscow on Friday. He said Mrs Clinton had shown understanding of the Russian stance. The United Nations Security Council is mulling sanctions to punish the Iranians for failure to come clean on the nature of their nuclear energy programme. Many suspect Iran of hiding nuclear weapons plans. President Medvedev was quoted as saying that sanctions are usually pointless but may sometimes be necessary.
