Russia needs a united and stable Ukraine which helps it fulfill a centuries-old potential for cooperation and ties with the Ukrainians. The Russian Ambassador to Ukraine Mikhail Zurabov has told this to a bilateral conference in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk. He looked forward to a whole new era in relations after the election of President Viktor Yanukovich. He also mentioned possibilities for Russian help in overcoming acute economic difficulties on the Ukrainian side  in the form of expertise and discount natural gas sales. Mr. Zurabov saw Russia and Ukraine as natural partners on their crash modernization programmes.
