| Mar 19, 2010 21:07 Moscow Time |
The northern circumpolar nations have met in Washington to discuss resource policies for the High Arctic. Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski mentioned Russian programmes to build new icebreakers and stimulate the development of oil and gas in the Arctic area. She also cited the US Geological Service as estimating that the High Arctic holds some 13 percent of the world’s oil and some 30 percent of its natural gas. The Russian delegation was led by Deputy Upper House Speaker Mikhail Nikolayev and the Lower House member Igor Chernyshenko.
