Hong Kong restaurants take shark-meat off the menu
| May 6, 2010 12:27 Moscow Time |
12 restaurants across Hong Kong are launching menus without shark meat on them in support of the WWF initiative to preserve the dying out shark population. Reports to that effect were published by “South China Morning Post”. Shark fin soup is a must on a premium-class restaurant’s menu. In WWF estimates, to cater to the gourmets Hong Kong imports more than 9 thousand tons of shark fins annually and controls about 80 percent of shark fin trade worldwide. About 73 million sharks are killed annually, which has put this sea predator on the verge of extinction. Environmentalists expect the number of eateries crossing out shark from their menus to increase.
