Over 5 thousand websites devoted to the Second World War have been opened ahead of the Victory Holiday. Among these are portals, which post war time documents and photos. A few days ago, a resource known as “1941-1945 Khronika Pobedy” or “Chronicle of Victory 1941-1945”, a new site of archive documents, enriched the Runet.

The portal presents a complete collection of periodicals published during wartime and highly classified situation reports to the Air Force of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army. It also has previously unknown photos taken during the war, including those taken by spy-planes.

All these are aimed at averting attempts to distort history. In an interview with the Moscow-based daily, “Izvestia”, President Dmitri Medvedev insists on the need to create electronic military archives that reveal the historical truth of the war. This move can only be welcomed given that Russians and people in other countries as well are interested in this topic. It’s sufficient to recall how large was the number of visits to the website of Russia’s State Archives when it declassified part of its documents.

The military topic is quite an urgent one and is now gaining momentum. Young people of the ages between 14 and 25 basically visit the large numbers of websites devoted to the war, says the marketing director of the “dostavka.ru” company, Alexei Gnusarev.

“According to the company’s analytical department, there are over 15 thousand websites devoted to war on the Internet,” says Alexei Gnusarev. “This is an urgent and interesting topic, which has been gaining momentum in the past years.

An interview with Marshall Georgy Zhukov has recently been shown on Russia’s Channel One. However, not all know that this originally appeared on the website of the channel and people could watch it there. Later, it appeared on all torrent trackers, and 100 thousand down loadings of the interview a day was registered. In fact, this was mainly done by the active part of the population, people of ages from 14 to 25,” Alexei Gnusarev said.

Many blogs and social networks are also devoted to the forthcoming 65th anniversary of victory of the Great Patriotic War. For one, www.odnoklssniki has launched a campaign known as “St. George’s Ribbon”, while the front page of the Yandex has posted the information received under the project “Pobediteli” or “the Victors” where veterans from various regions of the country can find each other.

In fact, the majority of websites have been decorated with the St. George’s Ribbons, the symbol of the Great Victory of the war where over 26 millions of people of the Soviet Union sacrificed their lives.
