The “Academik Fyodorov” research vessel is back to St.Petersburg today after circumnavigating Antarctica. In the course of the 201-day expedition Russian explorers did extensive research into the natural environment of the southernmost continent, and continued drilling a well to get water samples from sub-glacial Vostok Lake. The “Academik Fyodorov” delivered substitute crews and essential supplies to the Russian stations and temporary bases in Antarctica. All in all, the ship covered more than 42 thousand sea miles, more than one third of them in the harsh conditions of Antarctica.
