Finland amends law to give residence to foreign relatives
| May 26, 2010 21:06 Moscow Time |
The Finnish Interior Ministry has devised a draft amendment to legislation to allow foreign parents of Finnish citizens to apply for residence permit. The authorities produced the draft under public pressure in connection with the case of Irina Antonova, 83, who arrived in Finland from Vyborg in 2008 by a tourist visa to see her daughter, Natalya Kyayarik, who had been living in Finland for about 20 years. Antonova had survived a stroke and needed looking after. The Finnish authorities denied the Russian woman permanent residence and insisted on her deportation out of the country on the grounds that a mother was not a direct relative under the local laws.
