The Thai government has lifted the state of emergency and the curfew in Bangkok and some of the nation’s regions. The state of emergency and the curfew were imposed following the opposition’s mass-scale protests last week. According to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, the situation in the country is under control. The state of emergency was imposed on May 19th after Bangkok had seen the protesters’ fiercest clashes with police in the country’s recent history. At least 85 people died and some 2,000 others were injured in Bangkok since April 10th. The opposition, supporting the former Prime Minister Taksin Chinawat, was pressing for a disbandment of parliament and for calling general elections.
