Russia and the United States will join forces to ensure stabilization in Kyrgyzstan. A statement to that effect came in the wake of a meeting between Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin and the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State George Krol.
The two top officials were discussing preparations for a referendum on the new Kyrgyz constitution set for June 27th and parliamentary elections slated for October 10th.
Kyrgyzstan was thrown into a crisis early in April, when ex-President Bakiyev fled the country under pressure from the opposition. The subsequent mass riots were instigated by the former leadership and the interim government scarcely managed to suppress them.
