In Seoul, a group of Russian naval experts is through with debriefing investigators into the circumstances of the loss of the ROKS Cheonan in the Yellow Sea more than two months ago. They have been to the Pyeongtack naval base to inspect the corvette wreckage and the fragments of the torpedo which is claimed to have sunk Cheonan. They also met the crewmembers that survived the attack.

According to the South Korean military, the Russians have so far failed to report their conclusions. South Korea claims that the corvette was destroyed by a North Korean torpedo in the Yellow Sea on March 26th. 46 seamen died when the ship broke in two and sank.

Late last month Russian President Dmitry Medvedev responded to Seoul’s proposal to send Russian naval experts to the Republic of Korea. The Kremlin’s press service said in a statement that all parties involved should show restraint to avoid further escalation of tension and to preserve peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
