The problem of manufacturing and smuggling Afghan drugs is not a regional problem any more, it is a global threat now. Vladimir Putin made this declaration speaking in Istanbul at the third meeting of the heads of states participating in the Conference on Mutual Cooperation and Trust-Boosting Measures in Asia.

He stressed that, according to UN evaluations, “the world has lost nearly a million lives due to Afghan opium and heroin”.

“The problem is so serious that it is time to discuss it in the UN Security Council”, Vladimir Putin said. In the opinion of the head of the Russian Government, the world can oppose this threat only consolidating trust and working together, “proceeding from the notion of mutual responsibility and each others’ interests”.
