The European Parliament has voted to allocate 100 million euros for an international programme to explore and monitor the marine environment of the Baltic. Russia, Norway and nine countries in the European Union are to take part.

The programme will be a template for similar programmes to study three other European seas – the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea and the North Seas.

Parts of the Baltic seabed are lifeless because of toxic pollution and lack of oxygen.
