The fight against poverty is the global problem mankind is facing today. The United Nations Organization has worked out a special programme, “Millennium Development Goals”, which outlines a strategy for implementing this Programme in the period remaining till the year 2015. A series of issues concerning the realization of the UN Programme will feature prominently at the G8 summit in Canada (June 25th to 26th).
The world community carries out the fight against poverty at a state level. However, equally important is that every sensible person should realize and define his or her own stand in settling this problem, which is as eternal as the world itself.
"Poverty is caused by the inequality of people," publicist and the Director of the Russian Centre for Practical Psychology Sergei Klyuchnikov says. "People are unequal in both their opportunities and capacities. Those who prove stronger, seize financial, power and administrative resources and hold them within a long period. Of course, the disproportion in the wealth of the rich and the poor is different in various regions. The existing problem stalls civilization progress. It gives rise to a feeling of protest. In other words, if the rich do their utmost to preserve the current situation, they, as I think, put a delayed –action mine, which will pose a threat to their existence."
So what the rich should do in this case? Some days ago two American billionaires – Bill Gates and Warren Buffett answered very clearly to this question. They have unveiled their plans to give half their wealth for charity purposes and urged the other billionaires of the world on the Forbes’ annual list to do the same. Only a few billionaires have so far reacted positively to their Giving Pledge drive.
"It is rather doubtful though that people will be equally rich," continues Sergei Klyuchnikov. "It is rather doubtful though that people’s material wealth could be cut as if it were a lawn, and it is impossible to maintain it in such a state either. We know this very well. This will lead to an explosion. The rich should share their wealth with the poor – of course not for the purpose of dividing their wealth into equal portions between all the rest. This should be done for creating equal conditions for the most active individuals. This is an economic, a psychological and a spiritual problem. It concerns everybody, including the poor, the powers that be and the rich. As is known, a dislike for them is very strong. As one person said, it is impossible to become rich and happy in a poor and unhappy country. When the gap between the rich and the poor becomes critical, unwilling processes may occur. This concerns both Russia and the rest of the world. Therefore it is necessary to create a society of equal opportunities, really equal opportunities. This should be our goal. Meaning not the society of equal opportunities, not of financial equality."
The new goodwill ambassador of the UN Programme “Millennium Development Goals” actor Antonio Banderas has a similar opinion. Some time ago he said: “Poverty does not allow people to get a profession of their choice, that is why, it is very important to overcome it, the more so as we have sufficient knowledge, resources and potential for this.”
