65 years ago on the 26th of June 1945, representatives from 50 countries signed a Charter to create a new international organization, the United Nations.
The signing ceremony was held in San Francisco where the two-month work on creating the new world organization ended with the drafting of its Charter. It was the time when the Great Patriotic War, which claimed millions of lives, ended, while the war in the Pacific was going on. Naturally, the three countries of the anti-Hitler coalition, the Soviet Union, the U.S. and Britain, played the key role in the establishment of the United Nations. Understandably, one article of the UN Charter declares that the purpose of the United Nations is to maintain peace and security across the world. This coincides with other tasks set before the organization such as solving all issues by negotiation and promoting peaceful cooperation and friendly relations between countries. The United Nations has stuck to these principles in the past 65 years.
Unfortunately, these goals have yet to be met and they remain as urgent as they were 65 years ago. Armed conflicts continue and the threat of new ones is still very much there. Peaceful cooperation among countries leaves much to be desired. Consequently, in the past years, countries have insisted on reforming the United Nations with regard to the new realities in the world. This concerns the composition of the UN Security Council, which now has five permanent members who enjoy the right to veto. Concerning Russia’s opinion to this end, President Dmitry Medvedev said.
“Reforming the UN Security Council is the key aspect of modernizing the United Nations. It’s high time to speed up the search for compromise solution to expand the Security Council and make it more efficient”, says Dmitry Medvedev.
However, no one has called in question the prestige and significance of the United Nations that embraces 190 states, almost all countries of the world. The world nations are well aware that only the United Nations can find a just solution to any dispute between states. Concerning the role of the United Nations in the world, Dmitry Medvedev had this to say when addressing the 64th General Assembly session.
“The foundation of the United Nations is the greatest achievement of mankind in the 20th century. The efficient work of the United Nations is a symbol of the century, and we all should do our best to preserve it and make it stronger”, says Dmitry Medvedev.
The UN Charter came into force four months after it was signed in San Francisco on the 24th of October 1945 when all 50 countries ratified the document. This day is marked as the UN Day.
