Russia’s Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin has said Russia should take part in more UN peacekeeping missions across the globe.

Churkin said Russia’s 44th - 45th position on the peacekeeping list is at odds with its status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

The Russian ambassador believes that Moscow could help by sending helicopters.

At the moment, a Russian helicopter group is taking part in a peacekeeping mission in Chad and the Central African Republic.

Currently, the United Nations is carrying out 16 peacekeeping operations.

122 thousand peacekeepers are involved.
