The Organizing Committee of the Baikal Economic Forum has held a meeting in Moscow, presided over by Sergei Mironov, speaker of the Russian Senate.  It was  announced at the end of the meeting that delegates  from over 70 countries will be taking part in the 6th session of the BEF, which will take place in Irkutsk from September 7th to10th.

Sergei Mironov says that the meeting in Irkutsk should focus on cooperation between Russia and Asia Pacific countries.

The Baikal Economic Forum was formed in the year 2000 on the initiative of the Russian Federation Council and the Irkutsk  regional administration. Within the ten years of its creation, BEF has been transformed into a broad platform for discussing social-economic issues of the development of the eastern regions of Russia, with the objective of  their ultimate integration in the Asian economic system.  The Baikal Economic Forum has become a visible entity because of the high stature of participants and the serious issues under discussion.

Speaking at the session of the Organizing Committee of BEF, Mr. Mironov said that all the previous meetings of the Forum had been geared toward achieving high results, expressing confidence that the upcoming one in Irkutsk will not be different. The issue of cooperation between Russia and Asian and Pacific nations, as well as with SCO, will take center stage in Irkutsk, declared Mironov.

Russia is giving due attention to that aspect of its policy, he added. Russia should use  all the possibilities of  Asia and the Pacific, a key global  economic center, to develop its eastern regions, It is not enough to talk about the investment attractiveness of Siberia  and the Far East; Russia should support those regions more robustly to develop their economic potential, stressed Mr. Mironov.

The 6th Baikal Economic Forum will have a very busy schedule, and among the top issues for discussion will be the “Creation of modern cities environments in Eastern Russia”.  Issues to be discussed at the 7 roundtables have been defined, and they include a continuation of the discussion which was started in June at the St. Petersburg Forum, of the creation of an international financial center in Russia. A Day commemorating the establishment of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, SCO will feature in the closing part of BEF. SCO is a regular participant in the Baikal Economic Forum.
