The United States and Canada are mounting an expedition to explore the Arctic shelf for oil and gas and prove their right for the extended continental shelf and the Arctic seafloor. The dispute over the rights on the Arctic seabed has been on since Russia’s expedition to the shelf in 2007.
The collected data suggest that the Lomonosov and Mendeleev underwater ridges are continuation of the Siberian continental platform. This means Russia can claim a right to more of the ocean floor. Moscow has already submitted a relevant request with the UN commission.
