The Russian army has delivered on Kremlin instructions to deploy thousands of soldiers and over 300 aircraft and motor vehicles on operations to battle wildfires, this country’s worst in 40 years.

Defence Minister Anatoli Serdiukov reported this to President Dmitri Medvedev at a meeting with him in Sochi on Saturday.

Fourteen Russian regions remain under a state of emergency. Blazes in them have left some 30 people dead and more than two thousand homeless. The government is disbursing 5 billion roubles for emergency help.
