The New York Commission on the control, use and protection of historical monuments has refused to recognize as such monument a high-rise near the place where the World Trade Centre’s twin towers went down during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The high-rise will instead be replaced with a Muslim cultural centre and a mosque that are due to be built.
The project has been put forward by Imam Feizal Abdul Rauf.
Those opposed to the construction of the mosque feel that the future cultural centre will actually prove a monument of sorts to the fighters that staged the 9/11 acts of terror.
