The 13th Russian Culture Festival in Cannes, scheduled for 23-27 August, is expected to be one of the most remarkable events held as part of the Year of Russia in France cultural exchange.

This time, the Russian Culture Festival in Cannes features remarkable performances from Saint Petersburg: Boris Eifman`s ballet and “Monsieur Peugeot`s Wandering Puppets” troupe; concerts featuring young soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre and the army song and dance ensemble. The French audience will also see an exhibition prepared by the world-famous museum in Pavlovsk (outside Saint Petersburg), as well as a new collection, Journey from Saint Petersburg to Moscow, by fashion designer Valentin Yudashkin.

Apart from this, Russia presents a diverse cinema program featuring both acknowledged hits of the past, like Sergey Bondarchuk`s Oscar-winning 1965 adaption of Leo Tolstoy’s great novel War and Peace, and the latest Russian movies, Odna Voina (One War) by Vera Glagoleva being one of them included in the festival’s program. One War, filmed by a popular Russian actress Vera Glagoleva, has already gained a few international awards, though it may first appear to be ‘alien’ to foreign audiences. The film narrates the life of Russian women persecuted by their government for having children fathered by German soldiers. In an interview with the VOR, Vera Glagoleva said that “the horror of that time can be grasped through tragic fates of a few women”.

“We tried to turn this tough story into a parable. We wanted to keep away from realism and to make each shot poetically beautiful. I think we have succeeded in some way. It was important to show the film to war veterans. They were deeply moved by the story, and their opinion mattered much to me. How many warm words I was told after the premier! Some say it is good for schoolchildren to watch this film as it will teach them to sympathize and be kind to other people," says Vera Glagoleva.
