The European Commission backs an agreement on increasing Russian gas supplies to Poland, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said on Wednesday following a meeting with Poland's President Bronislaw Komorowski. He thinks this may help to improve bilateral cooperation.

Still, the European Commission will consider the agreement's compliance with the EU legislation.Under the new agreement, Russia will increase its gas supplies and sign a long-term contract up 2037.The EU believes that long-term gas contracts may hinder competition at Europe's single gas market.
