Ten people were killed and two more injured in Afghanistan on Thursday when NATO aircraft mistakenly attacked a parliamentary election rally in the Takhar province, officials said.

The NATO servicemen believed that they were targeting a militant meeting, a spokesman for the province's governor said.

He added that the attack had, among others, claimed the life of parliamentary candidate Abdula Vakheda Khorasani.

Neither NATO, nor the International Security Assistance Force's commanders have commented on the incident.
