Explosion rips through Gulf of Mexico rig

An explosion has ripped through the Vermillion Oil 380 offshore oil rig owned by Mariner Energy in the Gulf of Mexico, CNN reported on Thursday, adding that the blast threw 13 people into the water.

One person was injured.

Right now, several helicopters, two planes and 4 boats are en route to the site, with a probe into the explosion due soon to be opened, CNN added.

It is unknown whether the accident caused oil leak.
