Army units have been alerted in southern Russia on orders from Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, who has visited the Dagestan town of Buynaksk.

A terrorist attack was launched there on Saturday night, killing three servicemen and injuring 32 others. The condition of six of the injured is seen as grave.

According to a Defence Ministry official, a Zhiguli car, packed with explosives, was rammed into a lift gate at the entry to a military unit.

The servicemen opened fire, killing the suicide-bomber, while the car-bomb crashed into a truck and went off.
